5 W’s – Leadership

2023-02-15T12:32:16+00:00

There are five basic questions that aspiring news writers are taught to answer in beginning journalism, the 5 W’s – Who, What, Where, When, Why. The subject of leadership has been scrutinized by humans for thousands of years. It can be helpful to reduce the conversation to some basic questions using the 5 W’s of journalism.

Who

Often an individual can simply find themselves in a leadership position as a kind of default. “Someone has to do it.” These situations lead to frustration and an incomplete or less than optimal outcome. “Natural Leaders” will achieve limited success if they only rely on their innate abilities and talent without pursuing growth. I believe that we are all leaders in some capacity wether it is intentional or not.

What

What does it actually mean to lead?

A common mistake confuses management with leadership. A good manager makes processes and systems work, function as they should. Managers are extremely valuable and important components to success but they are not necessarily leaders.

leaders create, refine and cast visions that move people and organizations forward. Simply stated – They get things done.

Where & When

Leadership is a constant and when perceived and executed correctly should occur in a 360 degree arc, meaning that some level of leadership occurs throughout an effective and dynamic organization.

Why

I feel there are some important questions that are not asked often enough.

Why do you feel you are called to lead?

Why do want to lead?

What traits do you posses or pursue to be a leaders?

A couple of foundational truths I learned from my friend and mentor, John Maxwell state

“No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care” and “Leadership is influence – nothing more, nothing less.”

A vision is just a daydream until someone that is committed and passionate enough makes it happen. It is rare that anything of value is accomplished alone and that makes leadership a necessity for progress. True visionary, dynamic leadership requires determined introspection in a committed pursuit of growth and understanding. We must pursue a humility that reminds us to continually pursue wisdom, a compassion for those that God places in our sphere of influence and empathy for every person that we can reach in order to understand their needs and wants.

Leadership is a topic that can and should be discussed regularly. Accordingly, If called to leadership, you should pursue mentors and opportunities. Always remember that being called to lead is a humbling honor and responsibility.

Camp Projects

2023-02-07T11:52:56+00:00

The Lake Lavon Camp ministry strives every year to add something new to camp and to continue to renovate facilities. We have several projects currently underway and are in the planning stages of some other exciting ones.

Here are some of our current projects:

Archery course – The swishing sound of a released bow string and the satisfying thump of an arrow on target will soon fill the air next to our riffle and axe ranges.

Fannin Dorm – Finishing touches are being completed on the remodel of the restrooms at our Fannin dorm.

Ridge Vents – Our continuous effort to improve our HVAC efficiency includes adding ridge vents to our dorms and improving insulation.

Conference Center – Next month, we will complete a small expansion in our main worship area to allow for more seating. More seats for more wins for the kingdom!

Water Fountains – We are installing new water fountains that will refill those large water bottles to keep everyone hydrated. H20!!!!!

Pole Barn – We will be adding a new pole barn to our maintenance area to provide protection for our equipment.

Projects in the planning stages –

Challenge Course – We are working with designers to plan and build a continuous belay challenge course that will allow a high participation rate with many exciting activities. There will certainly be a high rate of thrilling challenges.

Pool – Design work for new aquatic facilities to include water volleyball and a splash pad are on the drawing board.

Collin Renovation – We are planning a major renovation for our largest dorm (sleeps 96) that also has the best view of the lake. A special thanks to Frisco First for kicking off our fundraising campaign for this project!

New Dorms – A part of our master development plan that is underway with the help and guidance of representatives from Gensler Architects and Bjerke Development, we are working on designs for new dorms.

Our hopes and prayers are that these and many other projects align with God’s will for His camp and will help us to continue reaching generations with the good news of Jesus Christ.

If you would like to be a part of these exciting projects you can contact us at office@lakelavoncamp.com or call 972-736-2273. We love our volunteers!

Collin Dorm Renovation

2023-02-03T12:51:10+00:00

We have officially began our funding campaign for the renovation of our Collin Dorm. Our largest and one of our oldest dorms is in need of a major renovation. The Collin dorm is named in recognition of one of our partner ministries, The Collin Baptist Association which is a network of Collin County Churches dedicated to serving and equipping the church body and spreading the gospel.

The dorm sits in a premier position on our property with beautiful lakefront views. Our redesign will optimize the incredible views while providing much needed upgrades to the amenities. The building can house up to 96 campers and includes a meeting space. This renovation will enable us to continue to serve generations of campers and continue the rich legacy of life change that happens here at Lake Lavon Camp and Conference Center.

We have sent letters and emails out to members of the CBA network seeking their participation in this campaign. We have been blessed to have received 15K in contributions so far. We need to raise 350K to fully fund the project. If you or your organization would like to help us reach this goal, please donate to the Collin Project using our drop down menu found on our donation page at leklavoncamp.com. If you would like more information, contact gary@lakelavoncamp.com or call our offices @ 972-736-2273.

LLCCC goes International

2023-02-02T17:34:46+00:00

In obedience to the great commission and in recognition of the powerful impact of camp ministry, A team from Lake Lavon traveled to Honduras in partnership with MEPI: Ministerios Evangélicos para la Plantación de Iglesias to train youth leaders and run two camps.
Four staff members spent the first two weeks of 2023 in the tropic climate of Honduras. Outside of Trujillo, on the picturesque beaches, the team taught youth leaders games, activities and methods for running an effective camp. Following two days of working with their Honduras team, they all welcomed students from the surrounding areas. They experienced all the elements of a great camp – games, adventures, great praise music and a clear presentation of the Gospel.
Both sessions of Camp FARO ( spanish for lighthouse) were great success. We’re already looking forward to returning next year to share the power of camp.

Summer Missionaries – mapping out a future

2023-02-02T19:49:26+00:00

MAPPING A FUTURE FOR STUDENTS

I am a complete map geek. In the late 70’s to early 80’s a had a part  time job as a delivery driver and used something called a Mapsco to navigate the Dallas-Ft.Worth area. In the Marines I learned the art of navigation using a lensatic compass and a topographical map. As a father, I took my sons on trips into wilderness areas using topographical maps and later taught middle schoolers these “ancient” orienteering skills as an outdoor education instructor. The lessons learned from maps reach farther than the obvious A to B travel.

Charting a course is a skill that creates clarity and success. The methodology is parallel   to the skill of goal setting. You start with your destination determined. Observe the optional routes and possible barriers. Plan a course of action. Execute the plan, adjusting as necessary based upon factors both anticipated and unanticipated.

Youth ministry presents the same opportunity for such a skill set. Students will leave our care as they grow and enter adulthood. Unfortunately, studies show that a majority of these young students are veering from the path as they enter the next phases of their journeys. The challenge to keep the on route is daunting but not impossible with a plan in place.

One of my favorite aspects of serving in camp ministry is our Summer Mission Team (SMT) program. Every summer we welcome college students into our SMT program. It is so much more than a summer job. The students serve campers, leaders, each other while daily immersing in scripture. The SMT program is designed to engage and equip students as they seek to find their place in this world. We build life-long relationships. Our goal is for the SMT program to impact the students in such away that they return to their campuses on fire for Christ, providing exponential sparks for Christ centered growth in their communities.

We are creating a new program for High School students to get a glimpse of the Summer Missionary program as well. It is a volunteer program that can be for either a one or two week period. The program will introduce the youth to the ministry of camp and provide Christian leadership principles to equip them to identify their destinations and map out the path.

Think about the impact a goal setting mindset, centered not on material but spiritual, could produce in the lives of young believers. Equipped to navigate through a world that will challenge them on every level. Producing  young leaders hungry to change the world for Christ.

RX – Volunteer

Lake Lavon Camp is blessed every year to welcome a variety of volunteers that add immeasurable value to this ministry. I praise God for every person that He sends to our aid. As with most non-profit organizations, these individuals provide not only skills and time but a great deal of encouragement to our staff. Their passion to see God’s kingdom continue to grow and flourish in the next generations stokes the fire that keeps our staff moving forward.

In celebrating these great people, I would like to share some insights concerning volunteerism.

Volunteering has long been ingrained into the fabric of our culture. We possess an inherent desire to be part of something bigger than ourselves. The exiting facts that research verifies extoll the many benefits of volunteerism.

Volunteering can lead to

        • Improved mental health
        • Increases physical health
        • new skill development
        • new relationships
        • Improved resume

Overall benefits show that volunteering can help us combat loneliness, depression and anxiety. Studies have also determined that active volunteers tend to have a longer life-expectancy rate.

Fun Volunteer Facts:

  • 30% of Americans volunteer each year
  • 64% of volunteers are women
  • 42 is the average age of a volunteer

Not Fun Volunteer Fact:

  • Volunteerism has declined 26% over the last decade.

I don’t think it is coincidence that our current social climate is facing higher levels of ailments such as loneliness, depression and anxiety while our involvement in volunteer activities has decreased. I do not suggest that simply volunteering will cure these things but I do believe research has shown that it is valuable tool in combating them.

If you would like to explore volunteer opportunities with our ministry please reach out. We love our volunteers!
